Looks Like Rain

As some of you in the north-western hemisphere may have noticed, it’s getting a bit cooler and the nights are coming a little faster, looks like autumn is just around the corner :) From a gardening point of view, this can mean your heavy drinkers will need less work from you to stay healthy, but also that your grow-lights will get a bit more usage.

In preparation for this, I’ve started up my indoor garden for the cooler period of the year, because I don’t really use grow-lights, it’s primarily made up of herbs and plants with pretty foliage (like lilies) to keep my thumbs green until the spring time. That said, please don’t panic! We’ll still be seeing sun all the way through until early October (depending on where you are) so unless premature frost is expected, I’d still suggest leaving whatever is outdoors where it is for now.

For the bargain hunters among us, a lot of shops will start to release their summer plants at discounted prices to free up space for more winter-friendly species, so you can definitely head there and ask around to see if they have any deals going on. I’ll be going along soon to get some tomatoes, peppers and strawberries on the cheap to keep alive until the last frost to ensure heavy crops from April until September (also, because I would like to try grow lights out and see if they can be coaxed in to fruiting for a much longer period).

If you’re running low on space already and don’t want to add too many new plants to your collection, it may be time to start thinning out your crops. My dad’s sunflowers are beginning to topple over and destroy everything in their path (at their prime they hit 12 foot!) so if you have anything that could be harvested and donated to the compost heap, that’s probably the best plan-of-action.

With all of that said, I love this point because it’s where you can get some serious yields, I’ve spotted around 16 buds and 3 flowers on my pepper plants so those should be coming in very soon and well… you’ve seen the coriander. It’s so exciting to see everything flowering at once including the free seeds they gave out at the Good Food Show (if you’re ever in the London area, I’d seriously urge you to check this out, I left with a candle made of carrots once and the celebrity chefs are so friendly) so here’s to hoping your plants are doing great too!

If you have any pictures of them you’d like to show us, feel free to email them to me and I’ll do my best to get up a summer compilation of your wonderful plants by the 5th of September.

Sidenote: if you’re having trouble with transplanting your plants indoors, be sure to check this post out, it should help you along.

Excellent entry again, Josh! I’ll make note of it, even if it stays quite warm here. :)
