Gardener's Glossary: Damping Off

Damping off is the term used to describe a fungal infection which will decay seedlings in their early sprouting stages causing them to die off. Usually, you will find the mould in damp soil with poor ventilation that has been left in a warm area for too long, which is the perfect environment to allow fungus to multiply.

The Last Frost Is Coming!

I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but the last frost is barely a month away! With that shock settling in slowly, I’m starting to prepare my garden for the summer months and enjoying the early taste of warmth and sunshine. There isn’t too much to do right now, but there are a few things you could be keeping busy with that your transplants will thank you for.

Plant Spotlight: Shamrock

Happy St Patrick’s Day! Since it’s the closest we’ll get to a green holiday, I’m taking full advantage today the spotlight on one of the day’s most prominent symbols: the clover. Botanically known as the trifolium, which translates from Latin to “three leaf”, the cousin of sweet peas and soybeans has a strong agricultural use, which makes it more important than you may think.

Peace Lily Care

An old picture of my peace lily

I, like my mother and a surprising chunk of my friends, have a potted peace lily perched on my windowsill and for good reason. The peace lily is very easy to care for (even if you forget to water it) and produces some of the most fantastic flowers I’ve ever seen. Even though it’s setting off my hayfever right now, I still can’t bring myself to put it outside.
