(Partially) Wordless Wednesday: 19th May 2010

Today was a great day. I finally got out there and started swinging my axe at this new garden to get it looking at least reasonably pretty before autumn comes around. It didn’t go too badly and I managed to get a fair bit done, but the more I did, the more I realised that this isn’t a light task.

So far, I’ve started turning the soil over in preparation for the turf coming in the near future and realised that clay is the worst soil in the world. At this point in time, I’d rather have a herd of elephants in place of this thick, non-porous mess, so it looks like I’ll be pulling in some new garden soil as well to mix in with it and give the plants a better chance of surviving.

Crazily enough though, a lot of plants do seem to grow out there. The wild lettuce is very prominent and dandelions grow in every garden on the street. Although I haven’t done any formal testing, the soil seems very fertile and I don’t think it will be too much of a problem once I get some well draining material in there too, which is a massive plus.

Overall, I’m very excited about the future of the garden. Sure it may not be much now, but in my mind’s eye I can see luscious bushes with birds pecking away at the berries as they chirp their sweet song. Butterflies fluttering around and giving my brother something to take pictures of for mum. A warm recliner in the shade to read into the night. It’s time like now that I know why I love gardening, you have the ability to transform anything in to a masterpiece and enjoy it for years to come. I wake up every morning excited about the jobs I have to get done.

Here are today’s pics, please excuse the terrible mess:

    Hey Josh,

Sounds to me that its just one of those days you are surely gonna enjoy. What I usually do in those days too is to get the family members join with me. And then in the garden we can have some chatting while drawing out weeds and preparing the plants. That’s the time when our simple gardening turns into memorable experience.
